Holiday dialysis in the Algarve
The Algarve is Portugal's southern coast — a string of beaches, cliffs and resort towns that draws visitors from across Europe, and a region used to welcoming travellers who need dialysis. From Faro and the eastern towns near Tavira to Portimão and the western beaches, you can keep your treatment routine and still enjoy your holiday.
dialisis.travel is a free, independent directory. We list the dialysis centres we can find across the Algarve — whatever the operator — and forward your inquiry to a centre only when you choose to send it. We are not a booking platform and we never charge you a fee.
What to expect in the region
Portugal runs its public health service, the SNS (Serviço Nacional de Saúde), alongside private clinics. In the Algarve you'll find centres in Faro (the regional capital, beside the airport), Portimão to the west, and Tavira to the east. Holiday patients usually arrange sessions with a private or visitor-friendly unit; the public system mainly serves residents and emergencies.
A typical routine is three sessions a week of around four hours, but your schedule is a matter for you and the centre. We don't offer medical advice — we help you find a centre and get in touch.
Getting around
Faro Airport (FAO) is the gateway to the Algarve, with direct summer flights from the UK, Ireland and northern Europe. It is right beside Faro itself and well connected west and east along the coast by the A22 motorway, trains and buses. A centre a town or two from your resort is usually a straightforward trip; when you contact a centre, ask how visiting patients normally get there and about parking.
Planning & timing
The Algarve fills up in summer, and dialysis slots are limited. If you are travelling between June and September, arrange your treatment as early as your flights and hotel — inquire several weeks ahead, get your slots confirmed in writing, and keep a backup option in mind. Outside the peak there is usually more availability, but it is still wise to arrange before you arrive.
What to bring
Centres usually ask visiting patients for a recent letter from your home unit (your dialysis prescription and schedule), recent blood test and virology/serology results, a list of your medications, and your passport plus EHIC/GHIC if you have one. The exact requirements vary by centre, so confirm the list when you make contact and leave time to collect paperwork from your home unit.
Confirm before you travel
Availability, what to bring, languages spoken and any costs differ from centre to centre and can change. Always confirm the details directly with the centre before booking flights or treatment. We list centres and check their contact details, but we are not affiliated with them and cannot confirm availability on their behalf.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get dialysis in the Algarve as a visitor?
Yes. The Algarve has dialysis centres that take visiting (holiday) patients. Contact a centre directly using the details below to ask about availability and what to bring — we forward your inquiry only with your consent.
How far ahead should I arrange holiday dialysis in the Algarve?
The Algarve is Portugal's busiest beach region in summer, so centre capacity is tighter from June to September. Inquire several weeks ahead for summer travel; there is usually more flexibility outside peak season.
Does my EHIC or GHIC cover dialysis in the Algarve?
An EHIC/GHIC can cover medically necessary treatment within Portugal's public health service (SNS), but holiday dialysis is often arranged privately. Coverage and any cost depend on the centre and your situation — confirm directly before you travel.
